UK Universities to cut thousands of teaching jobs

UK higher education is reeling from reports that thousands of teaching jobs are to be axed across universties throughout the country in response to budget cuts. The University and College Union (UCU) believes that more than 15,000 positions could be cut in the coming years.

The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) has announced funding cuts to teaching budgets for 2010-2011 including a 14.9% reduction in capital funding. The first cuts to teaching budgets in the UK in over a decade have been met with widespread criticism, with the Guardian reporting university chiefs quoting as many as 300,000 students potentially being turned away from university places this year.

School Exame PaperThe latest English School League Tables for 2009 show that whilst there has been an improvement from the previous year, 247 schools face closure over their poor performance, failing to meet minimum standards for GCSE exams. An additional 50 schools have already closed.

The situation has escalated with LMU being ordered to repay £36.5 million as the University and College Union (UCU) called for the resignation of the Universities board of governors.

UK budget cuts impact higher education

As the dust settles from Alistair Darling's pre-budget report yesterday, UK universities have warned that their will be difficult times ahead as the government looks to make £600 million in savings from the higher education sector.

Fears emanating from within the industry are that the UK will now have a situation where students face increased fee's with reduced services. The ongoing effect of cuts in the sector on the UK's long term global competitiveness are also being questioned.
