UK higher education is reeling from reports that thousands of teaching jobs are to be axed across universties throughout the country in response to budget cuts. The University and College Union (UCU) believes that more than 15,000 positions could be cut in the coming years.

The latest English School League Tables for 2009 show that whilst there has been an improvement from the previous year, 247 schools face closure over their poor performance, failing to meet minimum standards for GCSE exams. An additional 50 schools have already closed.
